Constipation: Causes, Symptoms And Remedy

Constipation hits everybody at some point. The uncomfortable situation can be caused by many things, including a bad eating plan and lack of fluids. Dr. Vaibhav A. Parekh, director of Medstar Harbor Primary Care, talks about how to prevent and cure constipation, and how to tell if it's a indication of more serious health issues.

What are symptoms that you are constipated?
Common symptoms of constipation consist of straining during a bowel movement, hard bowel movement  and a sensation of incomplete emptying after a bowel movement. While there is no absolute number of bowels, fewer than three a week is one of symptoms of constipation.

What are the typical causes of constipation?
As simple as this might sound, unhealthy lifestyle choices are a frequent cause of constipation.
A eating plan lacking in sufficient amounts of fruits and vegetables is a typical, easily treatable and reversible cause of constipation. Five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables every day is considered to be frequent. While this might sound like a lot, it's not that difficult. Having a banana with morning meal, a nice salad serving with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and berries for lunchtime, and an apple or orange after dinner would be an one way to get enough fruits and vegetables in a day.

Lack of sufficient drinking habits (2- 3 liters every day) is another typical cause of constipation. Sodas, fruit juices, sweetened tea and flavored water are not substitutes and should not take the place of  water. Coffee act as diuretics and promote urination and fluid reduction. This in turn can cause lack of fluids and cause to constipation.
Sedentary way of life is another frequent culprit. A daily schedule promotes a proper and balanced bowel schedule.
In inclusion, irregular consuming routine often results in an irregular bowel habit. Not having a set time for morning meal, lunchtime and dinner makes the bowel schedule unpredictable and can cause to constipation.
Holding for too long when you need to have a BM also results in constipation. When you have the urge to go to the bathroom, just go!
Other causes of constipation consist of prescribed medicines (especially narcotic painkillers, hypertension level medicines, antidepressants and iron pills), diabetes, vertebrae injury, under active hypothyroid, electrolyte disturbance (low blood vessels potassium, calcium, magnesium), etc.

How do you cure constipation?
Resorting to a healthy life is often a simple and fast fix to dealing with constipation. Eating plenty of fiber by means of fruits and vegetables(not fruit juices), drinking sufficient amount of water and a workout schedule usually allows in regularizing bowels. Moreover, having a set time for three meals a day allows to make bowels frequent and predictable. Despite making healthier way of life changes, if there is inadequate relief of constipation, try over-the-counter stimulant laxatives for a couple of weeks. These come by means of medicines and rectal suppositories. Different individuals react differently to these stimulant laxatives. These stimulant laxatives are very helpful in the treatment of short-term or periodic constipation.

Is it safe to take laxatives?
Laxatives are secure to take if they are used for a few months (usually a few weeks), or to cure periodic constipation. Serious use of stimulant laxatives can cause to electrolyte imbalance (loss of blood vessels potassium, excess buildup of magnesium), lack of protein and salt overload.
In inclusion, chronic need to use stimulant laxatives may mask underlying medical conditions, which eventually could get worse. For example, an individual may have hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or be experiencing a complication of prescribed medicines resulting in constipation. Laxatives are not a good answer for these issues when dealing with the hypothyroid situation or changing medicines would be a wiser approach.

Constipation could also be a indication of colon cancer in someone who also has decreased appetite, weight-loss, black chairs or blood vessels in chairs and perhaps a genealogy of melanoma of the digestive tract.

It is true that people suffer from constipation in their life some or the other time. The lifestyle and the eating habits we follow are the leading causes for constipation. Excessive dependence on the fast and highly processed foods makes the issue critical. Usually these foods are highly processed; lack the fiber in the content. Taking foods like apples which are high in fiber helps in sorting off constipation. Drinking sufficient water and taking small quantity of healthy diet at a regular interval is also useful.
